Q:
When is the next computer/TV drop-off scheduled?
A:
Computer/TV recycling is scheduled with the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection dates.
View schedule
Q:
Will the trash schedule change for the holidays?
A:
American will not collect on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years Day. If your usual trash day falls on any of these holidays, then your trash will be collected on Saturday of that week. No other changes will be made.
Q:
Does the City provide for a large-item collection?
A:
Yes. Single family homes set their bulk item(s) out on their regular trash collection day. Townhouses set their items out on FRIDAYs only.
Q:
What kinds of bulk items does the City collect?
A:
Residents may set out: mattresses, tables, chairs, sofa, loveseat, washers, dryers, dishwashers, stoves, bed frames, small bookcases, large ones if they are broken down and tied together, and grills without a tank. If you have an usual item, contact the Trash Line at 703-257-8252.
Q:
Why doesn't the trash company take TVs curbside?
A:
TVs and other computer equipment contain hazardous metals such as lead, mercury, nickel, and cadmium. These metals are often banned from landfills. In the City's case, the private landfill owned by Waste Management Inc. has banned these metals. So we either recycle the materials or the equipment is disassembled in a proper environmental way.
Q:
When is my trash collected when there is hazardous weather conditions?
A:
Contact the Manassas Trash Line at 703-257-8252 for instructions first. Generally, if trash is not picked up due to hazardous road conditions on your regular collection day, then it will be picked up on that Saturday.
Q:
What is single stream?
A:
It means that residents may place all recyclables in one container without separating them.
Q:
Who do I contact if I have questions about trash, recycling, yardwaste, and other environmental questions?
A:
Contact the City of Manassas Trash Line at 703-257-8252.
Q:
What is the Courtesy Truck?
A:
It is a Street Department truck parked at your residence for either a night or a weekend. Residents may fill it with almost everything not hazardous. City Street Department picks up the truck the next morning. Cost is $75. Contact the Street Dept. to schedule at 703-257-8378.
Q:
When will I get the new recycling cart?
A:
We expect to have the carts the first two weeks in August. Starting in Oakenshaw,Old Town Station, and Tudor Oaks we will deliver carts in 5 sections. A flyer will be delivered several days prior to delivery of the carts in your neighborhood.
Q:
What should I do with my green bin?
A:
You may keep it to use in your home, donate it to the schools, use it as a planter, stool, or recycle it in your new cart if it is in bad condition. If you donate it, PLEASE clean it out!
Q:
Will the City have places to recycle cardboard?
A:
Yes! The current sites will not be changed; Old Post Office at the corner of Church and West-in the back, and two dumpsters out at Public Works, 8500 Public Works Drive.
Q:
Is there another place that accepts recyclables?
A:
YEs!. The MTS at 8305 Quarry Road accepts recyclable materials. As you enter the site, immediately turn right into the parking lot. At the end are dumpsters that residents may use. Hours are: 5Am-5PM, Monday-Friday. Open on HHW Saturdays from 6AM-noon.
Q:
Why is the City going to a large cart? Isn't the bin enough?
A:
Actually many residents are already using 2,3, and even 4 or more recycle bins each week. The switch to the larger cart will make it easier for residents to wheel it to the curb. No more need to use paper bags to separate the recyclables. With the addition of picking up large cardboard boxes, all plastics #1-7, aluminum foil, and other additional items, residents will need the cart. Besides, the carts have lids on them so they will prevent some litter from blowing down the street.
Q:
What are new items that we can recycle with the new program?
A:
Plastic bottles and jugs #1-7, wide mouth plastic containers like yogurt, cottage cheese and margarine tubs, empty food aerosol cans, gable-top milk and juice cartons, bagged plastic film (place numerous bags in one bag), aluminum foil and trays, rigid plastic such as pails and cups, all books including paperback and hardbound and large cardboard boxes. PLEASE RINSE OUT ALL FOOD CONTAINERS.
